Pat Straub

Patrick Straub

Pat Straub grew up in Bozeman, learning to fish on Sourdough Creek. He left Montana for college, knowing he would eventually return. After earning a degree in writing from Beloit College and a stellar career on the soccer field, he returned, ready to take on Montana's trout streams. After spending one day on the water as a guide for Parks' Fly Shop in Gardiner, he knew his work lie in guiding. For several seasons, he guided for Destinations and the Yellowstone Valley Ranch, one of the West's premier lodges and operations at the time. A move to the Missouri came a few years later and the rest is history.

Since then he has managed a private angling and hunting club and written a half-dozen books, including the forthcoming Every Thing You Wanted to Know About Fly Fishing But Where Afraid to Ask. His guiding has taken him to south Florida, Chilean Patagonia, and southern Africa. He and his wife own and operate Gallatin River Guides in Big Sky, Montana and with Garrett Munson, he owns and operates Montana Fishing Outfitters. In addition to being a highly-respected guide, outfitter, and shop owner, he is an award-winning soccer coach.

Garrett Munson

A summer living in Cooke City, Montana, just outside the northeast boundary of Yellowstone National Park, was all it took to hook Garrett on a life in the mountains of Montana. Nearly twenty years later, Garrett is still here and living the dream as a fly fishing guide and industry professional.

He honed his ability to teach and develop curriculum during a lengthy stint as a field instructor and operations director for a wilderness adventure therapy program for troubled teenagers. His work involved loads of program and curriculum development, outdoor education, and demanding situations. But seeing his natural talents as a guide and instructor, Garrett finally took the plunge and made his passion for fly fishing for trout his profession. A lifetime of fishing finally came to fruition.

Over a decade later, he's still guiding and running the Helena/Missouri/Westside operations for Montana Fishing Outfitters, cranking out about 120 guide days a year on the oars. At teacher at heart, Garrett excels as a guide in meeting his anglers where they are at, whether seasoned veterans or rank beginners, and coaches to their strengths. While every guide enjoys fishing with great anglers, Garrett recognizes the pure joy that can only come in sharing the experience of someone catching their first fish on a fly rod.
